Getting soaked in parkrun

For the last couple of years I have been participating in “parkruns” which are a collection of 5km running events that take place every Saturday morning at over 1,400 locations in 23 countries. Events are run by volunteers and participation is free of charge, and they take place regardless of the weather.

These events generally involve running around a local park and could be compared with the traditional school cross country run, except that involvement is voluntary and the kit worn is not dictated. Most men wear dark coloured shorts with a variety of tops, but basically anything goes.

I usually wear unlined blue nylon shorts and a sweat-wicking T-shirt, with trainers and white socks. During the summer months I like to go commando under my shorts (this is something I do partly because it reminds me of PE lessons in school).

The opportunities for getting wet are few unless it is raining or if I was to jump into the lake in the middle of the park around which my local parkrun takes place.

Well this morning in the south of England there was torrential rain from early morning. I was already soaked through by the start of the run. My shorts had turned shiny and clingy. I wondered whether any of the other competitors would comment on my bulge or spot that I was commando, but nobody seemed to notice - all of the other competitors seemed more pre-occupied with their own running times.

My shorts have a secure drawstring and so they stayed in place. I don’t know how many of the competitors in an average parkrun are pant-less, but I would like to think it is quite a few. I did notice a lot of nice bulges today and especially those who were wearing lycra shorts.
