I wasn't aware this was age old advice but I had heard of some recent advanced treatments involving using extreme cold on limited areas of the body. I think its supposed to dissolve fat like the same way lettuce dissolves if it freezes. That seems a bit extreme and uncomfortable for me but an occasional cool shower is def something I can live with especially in my clothes. Years ago, There was a "common wisdom" where for many years they thought the cold, getting cold or being cold was bad for you and would give you a cold. And personally I think there still might be some validity to the idea. I think if you're already severly depleted and exhausted, than getting soaked in the cold might be enough to push you over the edge - make you more susceptible to catching a cold. But in general this MD made it clear that all things being equal, it can actually strengthen your immune system.
